Slovenia to Salzburg

Slovenia -yawn

(Warning!  This one is a short one and you may find it as boring as we found Lake Bled)

After seeing google images of Lake Bled back in 2015 and making it my background for all tech devices (if you've never googled it, do it now), I'd made it my mission to somehow see the beautiful lake with the castle island for myself and I couldn't have been more thrilled when Tarrah allowed me to add it into our trip itinerary.

After a quick one-hour train from Villach where we watched some American-bred modern vegan gypsies scare the living bejesus out of everyone on the train, we finally arrived in the long awaited land of Lesce Bled (aka Lake Bled, aka where the landscape from Frozen was created from). We arrived mid-afternoon on Sunday and  had originally planned to stay 2 days, but knew almost immediately upon arrival that 1 would suffice.

We took a quick bus from the station to the main part of town and trekked over to Jazz Hostel where we would be staying.  It was there that we would meet Jani who with his outlandish personality was undoubtedly the most memorable thing about  Lake Bled.

After a somewhat romantic and lackadaisical stroll down to the lake (which was  beautiful, but not nearly as beautiful as it looks Google photos and nowhere near as beautiful as Croatia or Austria), we took some photos before quickly realizing we had no idea what to do with ourselves.

(Photo of me. If you look to the upper left corner of the heart you can see the tiny castle)

Perhaps we had become jaded from the beauty of the Austrian Mountains or the clear Adriatic Croatian sea, but either way - we were, just as Dutch Peter predicted, totally and completely bored.

It was also right around this time that it literally started monsooning on us.  Drenched from the rain and somewhat deterred by the thunder and lightening, we ended up eating "authentic American bbq" with Jani for dinner before attempting to discover Slovenian nightlife.  One taxi ride and 3 bars later, we quickly realized there wasn't one.  (To be fair it was a Sunday and there was a Slovenian Jumanji storm outside)

Either way, having seen what we came to see, we caught the 8am train the next morning and decided to hit up Salzburg instead.

Sometimes things are not all you dream of - like a hot guy at the gym who you finally get the nerve to talk to and realize he's a moron or the pastries at Starbucks that look so good behind the glass but taste like packing popcorn, but in the end I'm glad to have seen the lake (I would've always wondered if it really was as spectacular as google images conveyed or spent the next year saving and scheming to get there on another trip) and I'm glad that my journey to get there led me to Villach and Salzburg - two truly unexpected delights.

As they say, when one boring door closes... :)
